Experiments showed that sudden contact with flowing molten smelt can result in tube temperature excursions of considerable magnitude. A frozen smelt layer on the tube surface reduces the magnitude of excursions and the water-side cooling environment plays a crucial role. A special probe was constructed that was capable of measuring both the heat flux and water-side heat transfer coefficient when the water-cooled probe was inserted into a molten smelt stream. All of the heat transfer coefficients, calculated from the temperature data, were in the transition boiling region. These results may have application to tube temperature excursions at primary air ports, which have been associated with tube cracking problems.
