The efficiency of autocausticizing reactions that form tri-sodium borate (Na_3BO_3) in recovery boiler smelt is of great importance to the success of borate autocausticizing technology. Since chloride (Cl) and potassium (K) are the most troublesome non-process elements in the recovery cycle, the effect of Cl and K contents on the autocausticizing efficiency was studied by burning dried borate containing black liquor particles in an Entrained Flow Reactor, and determining the composition of the resulting ash residue. The results show that Cl and K have no significant effect on the autocausticizing reactions.
