This paper describes the results of the field survey of water pipelines damages in the village of Hakuba caused by the 2014 northern Nagano Prefecture earthquake (M6.7, maximum seismic intensity lower 6 in JMA scale). The fault runs from north to south through Hakuba. Near the fault, compressed damages were observed for ductile iron pipes (standard joint), polyethylene pipes, steel pipes, and PVC pipes body. These damages were caused by ground compression. At a certain site, no damage was observed for polyethylene (HDPE) pipes and PVC pipes crossing the fault where the fault emerged at the ground surface. The polyethylene pipe was deformed in S-shaped across the fault. It was not corresponding with Z-shaped deformation of the stratum. Based on the ground displacement measured in this site, FEM analysis was conducted considering the geometric nonlinearity of the ground and pipe. The results indicated that the inner and the outer side of S-shaped polyethylene pipe cause strain concentration and the strain exceeds the maximum allowance value in case of 50 cm compressed deformation.
