摘要

Ndebele decorated earthen architecture in South Africa is part of a living tradition at risk. Ndebele art in its various forms constitutes highly visible, globally known icons—from historic propaganda images and the "postcard Ndebele" constructed by the South African tourism agencies during Apartheid (see Fig, 1) to recent glossy interior style publications and the globalizing reach of the work by Esther Mahlangu. Yet extant Ndebele living in earthen dwellings with mural decorations are diminishing fast, and knowledge of the tradition of mural decoration is at risk and in need of conservation, Due to these works' fluidity, they also demand renewed interpretation. This paper attempts to add to the currently stagnant state of conservation and practice of Ndebele mural decoration, This is partly done through a review of the historic interpretation, but more especially we point toward the necessity of a richer conservation-management approach-one that acknowledges the intertwined nature of the tangible and intangible components of heritage and relies on a model that includes a process of archaeologizing cultural layers and the use of personal histories within a co-constructed cultural ecology of a target community. Toward that end, we relate the eventful stories and current settlement of the Msiza family of KwaM-siza at Klipgat 249JQ. The academically conserved remains and history of their demolished settlement at Hartebeest-fontein where they lived from 1903 to 1953, as well as newly recorded memories, are together identified as an important wellspring for the study and interpretation of Ndebele architectural decoration per se. They also provide an important laboratory for the much-needed conservation, for a fuller understanding of Ndebele architectural decoration, and for sustaining a living tradition.
