Time reversal processing for the electrical signal measured by surface bonded multi piezoceramic sensors can be applied not only to detect the structural damage but also to monitor the impact of the structure. In practical situations, because only a limited number of piezoceramic sensors are available for monitoring the impact, it is important to reduce the number of the sensors. In this study, the minimum number of sensors required to do impact identification is numerically investigated by using a model based impact detection method based on time reversal processing. Impact identification capability is demonstrated by using a rectangular aluminum plate with nine surface bonded piezoceramic patches. Illustrative numerical simulation results indicate that the model based impact detection method based on time reversal processing can be successfully identifying an impact by only one sensor.
