摘要

The purpose of this paper is to present state of the art research in understanding the cognitive behaviour of designers and cost engineers. The proposed relationship between the disciplines of engineering design and cost engineering and consequently the need for the research is two-fold. 1) Cost engineering is commonly placed alongside design as both disciplines are subjective, knowledge-intensive, multi disciplinary and require the extensive use of expert judgement. 2) Within industry, designers and cost engineers are often required to work towards a familiar goal; to maintain and improve quality, variety and innovation whilst reducing costs, therefore effective understanding and communication is increasingly important. With this in mind the aim of this study is to carry out a comparison of the two disciplines with the objectives of investigating similarities between the cognitive behaviour of cost engineers and designers and to identify in which ways the problematic task of creating an estimate differs from creating a design. There has recently been a significant growth in design research concerning the way in which designers think. However research into the thought processes of cost engineers is severely lacking. This study has investigated the cognitive behaviours of five expert cost engineers across industry through the use of protocol analysis. The acquired protocols have then been analysed using a coding scheme that has been adapted specifically for the current research. Once tabulated in a common format the findings have been compared to previous studies carried out in design research. This structured comparison not only determines similarities and differences in cognitive behaviour but also contribute to identify areas in which understanding and communication between the two need to be optimised and developed within the industry.
