The way of adjusting DWT (Discrete Wavelet Transform) to EBCOT (Embedded Block Coding with Optimized Truncation) has a strong influence on hardware cost of JPEG2000 encoder. This paper presents an EBCOT-based Z scan radiation DWT scheme. It achieves good parallelity between DWT and EBCOT. In the proposed DWT scheme, row operation and column operation are synchronized, and all data in original image and low frequency sub-bands are read only once, thus a 50% decrease in memory access is realized. Furthermore, only a data tile is required to be buffered in each level of DWT decomposition, so the reduction in memory requirement is up to a factor of 5.49 compared with QCB-DWT scheme, which has already decreased memory requirement by 73%. In addition, our scheme features high speed and smoothed encoding flow.
