Future vehicles will require significant changes to their available processing power, network capacity and electrical fault tolerance to allow ongoing improvement in safety, powertrain and comfort systems. This Paper introduces the concept of "Network Vehicle Control" (NVC), shows how this meets the needs of future vehicle systems and details real implementations of NVC. The prototype implementation consists of a number of network vehicle controllers. These controllers include a very high performance microcontroller (> 500MIPs), high speed network interface (100Mbps) and a wide range of automotive I/O in a rugged automotive enclosure.
