This paper introduces a novel three-step method to consolidate liquescent foundation soil. The three steps are: first, drain the ground water to lower the underground water level by drilling well points; second, inject clay solutions into the soil through these well points, drain water again, and repeat this process several times; third, use machine to tamp the ground by shocking and compressing. The key to this-method: before the first step is carried out, a thin waterproof wall of clay concrete is to be built around the foundation plane. Because all the materials (clay solutions and low-grade concrete) used in this technology are very cheap, the engineering cost is lower than, and the efficiency higher than, those of the usual consolidation methods, such as the heavy tamping (dynamic compaction) method, the sand or granulate stone compaction stake method, dry jet mixing method, etc.. The safety and reliability of this method has also been proved. In Haikou city (Hainan China), there is a real project example, in which the liquescent foundation soil has been consolidated by this novel method. The geological features of the project area are very bad due to the three geological faults. The geological formation there is composed of soft clay and loose sand, and high underground water level of this area makes the situation even worse. Despite all these difficulties, the consolidation method has been successfully applied. This paper is organized in 5 parts: (1) Background of the researching subject (2) Basic principles of the method (3) The detailed measures taken (consolidation scheme) (4) A real project example (5) Conclusions
