CASE STUDIES OF THE APPLICATION OF INNOVATIVE ENERGY-EFFICIENT EQUIPMENT IN BUILDINGS

The Energy Efficiency Office (EEO) of Electrical and Mechanical Services Department is actively exploring means to reduce energy consumption in buildings and a series of initiatives are being implemented to achieve the goal. One of the initiatives is to investigate advanced and innovative energy saving equipment and technologies via series of pilot projects in government buildings with a view to promot the wider use of these technologies in public and private sectors of the construction industry. The investigation covers innovative equipment for lighting, air conditioning, lifts and escalators, etc. The paper will present details of two case studies of the pilot projects, one for lighting and one for air-conditioning, carried out by EEO in government buildings. The pilot lighting project involved the application of high output T5 lamps and luminaires in an indoor games hall. Aspects on both energy and visual performance will be presented for the new lighting system and comparison will also be made with the existing high bay lighting system using High Intensity Discharge (HID) lamps. For the case study in air-conditioning, focus will be on the application of indirect evaporating pre-cooling system for fresh air intake to building. The otherwise waste exhaust air and waste condensate water form the building air-conditioning system were used for heat reclaim through an integrated heat exchanging and evaporating unit in this pilot project. Significant energy saving have been recorded in both cases.
