3D reconstruction technique deals with developing 3D models from three 2D orthographic views. This paper reviews existing algorithms in terms of their relative advantages and weaknesses. Then, a new method developed to reconstruct 3D models from 2D construction drawings is presented. The method is unique in the sense that it combines knowledge based system with drawing interpretation so that engineering components can be recognized and reconstructed from simplified descriptions presented in the engineering drawings. The method is evaluated through the application of automatic measurement of quantities from drawings.
