To design for fire protection required for universal beams and columns the British Standard provides a formula relating the protection thickness to section factors, thermal conductivity, fire resistance and limiting temperature. However, this formula does not apply to the shallow floor beams, which are almost totally contained within the concrete slab. This paper is to derive an alternative relationship for determining the thickness of intumescent fire protection coating required for shallow floor beams, using existing fire test data. The results clearly show that the required thickness of fire protection to the shallow floor beams is thinner than to the regular steel beams. The formula derived can be used for quick, simple design calculation for the required thickness of fire protection. For safety reason in design there should be a safety factor used in conjunction with the formula. The analysis based on fire test data is supplemented with calculations based on beam temperature obtained from heat transfer models.
