The demolition of structures is governed by a number of criteria. The changing natures of demolition criterion from one demolition project to another makes the selection of demolition techniques very risky and time-consuming for the contractor. This paper describes the development of a multiple-criteria decision support system using Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) for the selection of the most appropriate demolition technique. The AHP comprises three parts: hierarchic structure, prioritization procedure, and calculation of results. A postal questionnaire and interview survey was conducted with demolition contractors in the United Kingdom to identify the criteria and the alternatives for the development of the hierarchic structure. There are six major influential criteria identified: Structure characteristics; Site conditions; Cost; Past experience; Reuse & recycling and Time. These criteria used to select three main alternatives: progressive demolition; deliberate collapses mechanism and deconstruction. An example is presented to illustrate the potential application of the proposed model using computerized decision support software, namely Expert Choice 2000.
