CLAY-BRICK RECOVERY FROM MASONRY DEBRIS BY MEANS OF A THERMAL PROCESS

In the Netherlands more than 95 percent of all stony fraction of building demolition debris is being reused as a road building material. Twelve million tons on yearly base and each year the amount is growing. To avoid problems in future, alternatives should be created for future recycling of building materials. For masonry debris, clay-bricks should be recovered and reused for future brick laying. A thermal process might be a possibility of recovering clay-bricks from masonry. In this research first a model is made, which can calculate the forces in masonry and the shear stress on the clay-brick mortar interface. Then laboratory experiments are performed in which pieces of masonry are thermally treated in order to determine the required temperature. In the next laboratory research the strength of the clay-brick mortar interface is being measured. The research project is being evaluated by doing a full scale test in the clay-brick factory. The research shows that clay-brick recovery can be very successful, but it strongly depends on the way of dismantling the masonry from the building.
