摘要

There have been many technological advances that have modified our cities ― the passenger lift, air conditioning and the motor car for example. The revolution in communications between people and machines on the move promises (or threatens) to be the next. The time taken to travel between, for example, one's home and workplace depends on both distance and mode of travel used. Communications changes the access model radically by allowing work to be conducted at either place or in "third places" such as transport facilities and coffee shops. Whilst it is too early to gauge fully the effect on the city and its buildings, there are some early conclusions to be drawn. There is the direct impact ― antennas on roofs, space for IT equipment, demands for highly serviced work spaces. Secondly there is the effect on peoples' movement -mobile telephones have had a profound effect on peripatetic workers. Finally IT is making an impact on the design of the airports, railway stations, community areas in housing estates and shopping malls. The most advanced are now incorporating cabled and wire-less information access to allow visitors to be continually connected.
