摘要

With their abundance of glass, exposed, celebrated, and often muscular structural steelwork and building services, many of the motifs of, so-called, high-tech buildings are being adopted by an increasing circle of architects and engineers. The new aesthetic that is being created is often characterised as providing rational structural solutions. This paper examines the validity of this claimed rationality. It develops a simple approach to the assessment of structural performance by considering comparative estimates of primary structural material volumes of alternative structural solutions. Not only does this methodology allow assessment of the rationality of high-tech building, but it also provides a general approach of immense potential benefit in the conceptual design of structures. Its reliance upon straightforward, physically based structural models, and the consideration that it is amenable to simple hand calculation, make this approach a powerful supplement to the increasing dependence upon computer analysis to inform even conceptual design.
