Photo-catalysis is an advanced oxidation process for decomposing organic pollutants in water and air. Titanium Dioxide (TiO_2) is a semiconductor and it has been proved to be the best among the other semiconductor materials tested for photo-catalysis due to its strong oxidizing power under UV illumination and also its chemical stability. Extensive scientific studies on photo-catalytic chemistry of Titanium Dioxide have been carried out over the past 25 years. The studies done so far have proved that Titanium Dioxide is very effective in the removal of organic and inorganic compounds from contaminated water and air. Recently, the Architectural Services Department of the HKSAR Government has carried out a pilot project on the application of Titanium Dioxide where the internal wall surfaces of a newly completed Refuse Collection Point (RCP) were coated with this material. The indoor air quality (IAQ) of this RCP was then measured and the results were compared to the indoor air quality of another RCP of similar construction and locality but without Titanium Dioxide wall coating. This paper presented the measured IAQ data of the two RCPs and the data are also compared and discussed. The paper also looked at the way forward for the application of Titanium Dioxide in the construction industry.
