摘要

Sustainable agriculture is commonly defined as average level of out put over an indefinitely long period without depleting the renewable resources on which it depends. Since Iran's greatest present and future need for water is to irrigate crops required to reach self sufficiency in agriculture, one of the national priority goals, in this paper several documents pertaining land and water use at national level are reviewed. The emphasis in this regard, is placed on identifying the urgent need of vast dry-land areas of the country, with respect to climate, soil, water and crop management practices. Since efficient use of soil and water are basic concepts to the survival of increasing population of the country, methods of optimizing the mentioned resources (soil and water) utilization are reviewed. Priorities and suggestions are given for maintaining such sustainable levels of their uses in the country. Role of supplemental irrigation in increasing the yield in arid and semi-arid areas is discussed and ways of enhancing the soil and water conservation and production measures are mentioned.
