This paper emphasizes the numerical study of the effects of float shape and simulation coordinates for some net-boom structures. Firstly, the modeling methodology in a body-fitted coordinate (BFC) system is presented, the grid generation for the particular geometry is briefly described and the porous medium resistance formula for the inclined net is derived. Secondly, the flow patterns and oil losses in three net-boom structures with a circular float are numerically studied. Thirdly, the results for net-boom structures with a circular float are compared to the results for the rectangular float with the same section area. Fourthly, a numerical study for some net-boom structures with a "stepped round" float using a Cartesian grid is conducted and compared with the previous two studies. It is found that the circular float smoothens the flow pattern to bring more water into the net-boom region under the same entry water velocity and may easily cut off the oil into small pieces. This causes a significant decrease of the oil volume of fraction in the oil lump. Therefore, the critical velocity for the circular float case is reduced. It is also found that the effect of float shape is more important, and the particular grid system used for the simulation has little effect.
