This paper presents simulations of NO_x formation on a pulverized coal-fired boiler with CFX4.3. Coal-fired utility boilers are emphasized by environmental requirements since they typically represent significant sources of pollutants. This paper describes how computer modeling tools were used to evaluate the combustion modification on NO_x emissions from a large coal-fired utility boiler. To evaluate whether the application of combustion modifications techniques, such as overfire air, to the boiler would be expected to reduce NO_x emission to the desired level, computational models were to used to simulate the boiler processes. The results of this study indicate that the modifications to the burners which improve flame staging would be expected to significantly reduce NO_x emissions.
