The review of biological treatment of hypersaline wastewater is introduced. Most studies indicate that more than 3% salt produces significant adverse effects on biological treatment of high salinity wastewater and results in low COD, NH3-N and PO43--P removal. Generally, the removal efficiencies of COD, NH3-N and PO43--P decrease with increasing salt content. Halophilic bacteria or salt-tolerant microorganisms are certified to remove BOD or COD effectively in a number of studies. Hopefully, these special microorganisms will be widely used for treatment of high salinity wastewater in the future. However, several key issues still need to be studied.
