Recovery of copper from acidic etcher by IEMEC and its recycling

A close-looped flow-sheet based on the ion exchange membrane-electro-winning coupling(IEMEC) technology was proposed to regenerate an acidic copper etcher on-site, recover copper selectively and recycle its use. It was characterized by selective recovery of copper from the spent etcher accomplished by IEMEC, and at the same time all the other components useful for etching were regenerated. The results show that at least 90% of electricity efficiency for copper recover in the IEMEC process can be maintained and the optimum conditions are as follows: cell voltage 1.5 - 2. 5 V, operating temperature 35 -45 ℃, keeping copper content in the cathode chamberat 20 -60 g/L and current density 0.4 - 1.2 A/m2. The regenerated etcher can be successfully reused to etch copper after adjusting its composition to the normal range, and its recycling property is as good as that of the fresh etcher after 50 times of use-recover-regeneration cycles.
