Seeking for new material solutions, this paper gives a guideline for the development of polypropylene blend systems combining foamability to low densities and pre-adjusted mechanical properties of the foamed sheet. A strong focus is given to the material development for soft, tough and recyclable polypropylene foams. The necessity of making use of long chain branched polymers in order to achieve low density foam is undisputable. Opportunities to improve the softness of polypropylene foams are shown up by the example of blends with propylene/ethylene-copolymers. In this study we will particularly present the results for the foamability of blends of high melt strength polypropylene Daploy~(TM) WB130HMS and Borealis BC250MO block-copolymer, RB501BF random-copolymer, and random-heterophasic copolymers Borsoft~(TM) SA233CF. For foams of comparable densities it is shown, that the tensile modulus and the elongation at break can be controlled by blend design. The ratio of the long chain branched Daploy~(TM) WB130HMS turns out to be the essential parameter for achieving low foam densities, many small cells and closed cellular structures. Thehoice of the suitable copolymer blend partner and the right blend ratio turns out to be essential for the final mechanical properties.
