Alveo is a producer of cross-linked closed-cell foams, which are applied in interior trim, tapes and all kind of consumer applications. Fine and homogeneous foams with low densities (less then 200 kg/m3) are produced via a three-step process, viz. extrusion of sheets, crosslinking and foaming using primarily azodicarbonamide as chemical blowing agent for polyolefin foams. In this presentation soft foams based on both cross linked polyolefin's and TPE's are compared. The benefits of TPE materials in these closed-cell foams are an improved compression set and an obtained softness and flexibility at higher temperatures as compared to cross-linked polyolefin foams. Resistance to different chemicals can be tailored by using these TPE materials. Closed cell foams are normally not breathable. Some TPE materials, by contrast, are breathable despite their closed structure. For that reason TPE materials are gaining attention. TPE foams can be produced by using either chemical blowing agents or physical blowing agents. Both routes offer specific benefits. In the case of chemical blowing agents a proper knowledge of the behaviour of the foaming agent in each step of the three-step process is required to ensure fine cells. These cells have to be formed during the foaming step only meaning that the foaming agent should not decompose in the earlier steps. In this paper some TPE foams, based on polyether-amide block copolymers, are compared with some polyethylene and polypropylene foams showing the opportunities of these new foams.
