摘要

The role of chemical blowing agents in the injection moulding process will be discussed, which goes beyond the obvious weight reduction or sink mark prevention. The gas, that is formed by a decomposition reaction in the plasticizing unit dissolves in the polymer melt and leads to decreased melt viscosity. This effect can be used to either allow better filling of the cavity, or to reduce melt temperature and therefore also cooling time. The need for holding pressure is greatly reduced or eliminated, because gas bubbles formed all over the cavity compensate for the shrinkage caused by the solidification of polymer. Lower cavity pressure allows the use of machines with lower clamping force. Suitable types of chemical blowing agents and useful features of injection moulding machines will be discussed regarding the production of parts with good mechanical and surface properties. With the right blowing agent substantial cost savings can be realized because of lower polymer consumption, shorter cycle time and smaller machines for the same part.
