For more than 40 years gas-assisted injection moulding has successfully been used. The gas is either generated by using chemical blowing agents or is directly injected into the barrel or the mould. Depending on the process mouldings can be produced with either a foam structure or hollow sections. Just a few years ago water-assisted injection moulding had been developed by the IKV in Aachen. The target of using water is to form hollow sections in the moulding, similar to gas- assisted injection moulding. In this paper the processes with a foam structure in the core are covered.
