Standard material data like MFI or shear viscosity, are not sufficient for predicting a polymer's foamability. Based on the approach that the melt is biaxially stretched during cell expansion, it should be possible to use the biaxial stress-strain behaviour as a criterion for assessing the foaming characteristics. With the Membrane Inflation Rheometer (MIR) developed at the IKV, biaxial stress-strain curves for various polymers were measured and described with the aid of simple characteristic data. For various grades of PP it is shown that polymers with good foaming characteristics have a fundamentally different stress-strain behaviour than types that are normally not used for foam extrusion. Biaxial stress-strain curves were plotted for a PP grade with a linear chain structure, a PP grade with a branched chain structure and combinations of the two. Branched PP types and blends consisting predominantly of such grades display a strain hardening that is vital for good foam formation and stabilisation. The polymers examined were subsequently processed on an extrusion line for foamed sheets. The foam structure of the sheets was examined and correlated with the measured stress-strain curves.
