Experiments were conducted in a dual loop circulating fluidized bed apparatus which provides sufficient solids inventory and downcomer head to enable high solids flux to be achieved in the riser. Solids volumetric concentrations as high as 0.2 to 0.25 could be maintained in the entire height of a 6 m riser. At these high density conditions, the commonly observed refluxing of solids near the riser wall is replaced by a relatively homogeneous turbulent flow structure. Slip factors up to 10 were obtained in the developed region of the riser.
