摘要

Shell Island is a barrier island located on the Louisiana coast that has practically disintegrating in the last decade. The main cause of this rapid loss has been a loss of the sediment source from the Mississippi River, coastal storms that frequently over wash these low barrier islands, rapid relative sea level rise caused by land subsidence, and erosion of fine sediments exposed on oceanfront shorelines. A Dynamic Morphosedimentary (DMSM) model (Campbell, 2005) was used to quantify longshore and cross-shore processes which result in observed barrier island changes. This model provided quantitative information for the development of a detailed, island-wide sediment budget, which was then used in the design of a barrier island restorationproject.
