In order to predict the effect of bed roughness on long - term and short - term morphology, a detailed model has been developed for the Western Scheldt estuary. This model covers a representative area of the estuary based on 2001 bathymetry data. After the model was calibrated and verified against observed data, a number of simulations were carried out with different bed roughness formulas to investigate the effect on morphological behaviour. The analysis shows that, both Van Rijn 2004 transport formulas and constant Chezy values are behaving in a similar pattern while spatially varying Manning's coefficients deviate.
