摘要

The Corps of Engineers is engaged in sediment management along the shores of California via its maintenance dredging of twenty-five coastal harbors. Using available dredging records, we estimate sand transport at these Corps navigation projects. We then examine how Corps sand management activities determine where sand is kept in the littoral zone, where it is not, what is being done to monitor for impacts where sand is removed from the littoral zone, and what is being done to optimize placement of sand within the littoral zone. Examples are given from two Corps sand management activities: shoreline monitoring at Humboldt Bay and opportunistic disposal nearshore of Ocean Beach, San Francisco. Results indicate that the majority of the sand dredged is being returned to the littoral zone, with one major exception at Humboldt Bay where a large quantity of sand is placed in deep water.
