A one-line numerical model study was carried out to determine if the efficiency of the sand bypassing program at Santa Barbara Harbor could be improved. The study showed that the normal dredge discharge point was located within a wave shadow zone cast by the harbor breakwater, causing a portion of the bypassed sand to accumulate. Moving the discharge point 1,400 ft downcoast was found to eliminate the sand accumulation and provide a stable coastline. Moving the discharge point an additional 1,400 ft downcoast was found to cause the shoreline to erode between the harbor and the discharge point.
