The present paper deal with a modified form of arithmetic coding that can permit source sequences of unlimited length to be coded as a single codeword. The result is a code of first in - first out (FIFO) type, meaning that the symbols are decoded in the same order as they were encoded. By this method one can achieve code lengths near optimal for the specified statistical properties. The final part of the paper presents the results obtained by applying nonblock arithmetic coding on different file formats (images, text documents, archives).
