摘要

The traditional method of designing a shear connection for composite structures loaded in flexure is to employ mechanical connectors; normally headed steel studs on top of the steel section. In new types of composite beam where most of the beam is embedded in the concrete, another method of arranging mechanical connection may be employed: the dowel action between the steel web and concrete appearing in the openings through the steel section. When developing applications for such connections, the shear behavior of the concrete dowel should be known. High initial stiffness is typical for concrete dowels, but the shear resistance will depend on the out-of-plane geometry of the opening. A total of 74 push-out specimens were tested in 2002 - 2003 to find out the shear-slip properties of the concrete dowel connection. Behavior of various edge profiles in the circular plate opening is studied. Various fracture mechanisms observed in the concrete dowels are reported in this paper.
