This work deals with the design/development of a methodological framework, under the form of an algorithmic procedure, including 23 activity stages and 7 decision nodes, for fuzzy multicriteria ranking of whole cells immobilization methods (WIMs) for biosensor/bjocatalyst selection/synthesis. An implementation of this procedure, is presented with the following alternatives/criteria, extracted by experts' opinion through a modified Delphi method (in a fuzzy version to count for uncertainty) in such a way that can be easily utilized in special cases of R&D or commercial interest. First-step alternatives: adsorption, cell to cell crosslinking, covalent bonding, entrapment, microencapsulation; Second-step alternatives: gelation, ionotropic gelation, polycondensation, polymerization, precipitation of polymers. Criteria (common to both steps): total cost, mean relative activity, mean absolute activity, mean efficiency, stability/reliability. Detailed monoparametric sensitivity analysis, as regards the impact of each criterion's weight on the suggested/preferred alternative, is performed, and incomparabilities within certain pairs of alternatives are investigated.
