The design, construction and early age performance of eleven CRCP test sections along the Yanwei Expressway in China were investigated. The eleven sections were designed and constructed for the following objectives: 1) to determine the effects of parameters on CRCP performance, 2) to determine the optimum crack spacing and the effects of active crack control on the performance of CRCP, 3) to determine the accuracy boundary conditions for the accurate numerical modeling of CRCP subjected to environmental factors and traffic loads, and 4) to verify the analysis results of CRCP when subjected to environmental factors and traffic loads. Field investigations were carried out on several CRC pavements in China and cluster cracking and punchout were adopted as the performance criteria when discussing the effects of some factors on performance of CRCP. Concrete properties were measured. The instrumentation and data acquisition system used to collect the early-age and long-term temperature and strain measurements were described. The early-age behavior of CRCP in terms of concrete strains due to environmental loading was extensively investigated and was presented in this paper. The early-age cracks were surveyed and falling weight deflectometer tests were also carried out.
