In the year 2002, Tata Steel upgraded one of its 6 strand billet casters. The upgradation included introduction of Electro Magnetic Stirrers (EMS) in the moulds and provision of closed casting with the use of Submerged Entry Nozzle (SEN) shrouding between the tundish and the mould. The objective of this upgradation was to improve the prevailing quality of billets and also to develop capability of producing a number of high-end value added grades to enrich the product mix. After commissioning of the upgraded caster, it was necessary to optimize several operating parameters before the desired quality level could be achieved. This paper discusses the experience at Tata Steel with the upgraded billet caster in light of the various optimizations carried out.
