摘要

Umicore (formerly Union Miniere) acquired the Bulgarian State Owned copper smelter MDK in September 1997. During this period from 1997 until 2000, Umicore conducted a program to stabilize existing operations and identify investment needs to expand production and meet environmental standards. From mid 2000 through April of 2002 a project was engineered and constructed to increase capacity of the plant from 165,000 to 210,000 tons per year anode copper. The project was also designed to bring the plant into compliance with Bulgarian regulations for SO_2 and particulate emissions. The contracted work consisted of installation of two new concentrate dryers, complete rebuild of the converters and converter gas cleaning, and major improvements to the sulfuric acid plants. This paper will describe the projects leading up to the May 2002 start-up of the expanded plant, the actual start-up and the subsequent performance during the first year of operation.
