Full Scale Testing of High Performance Concrete Bridge Beams with In-Situ Slabs

This paper reports on a series of full scale load tests carried out on three high performance concrete bridge beams with cast in-situ slabs. Three prestressed concrete beams with strengths of 75 N/mm~2 were constructed. 1m wide slabs with strengths of 25, 50 and 75 N/mm~2 were poured on top of the beams. The development of the concrete mixes for the beams and slabs is discussed. The beams were tested to loads that exceeded their expected capacities. One of the beams was tested to complete collapse while the other two were loaded well past their serviceable limits. Details of the loading arrangements and instrumentation are given in the paper. Moment deflection curves are presented for each of the test beams and for one beam in particular, the moment deflection curve is given for three repeated cycles of loading and unloading. This shows the extent of recovery. The neutral axis location at each load increment is shown for each of the three tests. A moment curvature graph is also shown. Comparisons are made between theoretical serviceability and ultimate capacities and those attained in the tests. In all cases the expected moment capacities were exceeded. A discussion is also presented on the longitudinal and interface shear capacities.
