Service management has emerged to be an important challenge and opportunity for the IP based networks which have become the default technology for multi-service data transmission. Network service detection and monitoring are some of the important aspects of service management. But due to the increasing scale and variety of networks and services, a scalable and extensible management framework for efficient network service monitoring and detection is on high demand. The paper proposes a service modeling methodology and a hierarchical distributed measurement and integrated management architecture for monitoring and detecting both basic and application services of IP networks. In this architecture, network services are described in abstract model and a generic service modeling language based on XML is adopted to support the description of network services. The conventional domain concept is reused and extended in the architecture, which can be nested to accommodate multiple levels in the hierarchy. SOAP protocol in Web Service and SNMP are used in the communications among distributed components. SNMP MIB definition is extended for accommodating of service monitoring and detection. A prototyping system is also presented in the context.
