In this paper, the complex-valued chaotic Ikeda Map (IM) is exploited as a 2-D spreading sequence for the design of quadrature modulation based Inphase-Quadrature direct sequence spread spectrum (I-Q DS/SS) communication system. The availability of a complex structure (i.e., real and imaginary components) in IM chaotic sequences with good correlation characteristics has motivated this work for its ready use in quadrature modulation system. The spreading sequences from the chaotic map are obtained by optimally selecting them from a large set of sequences, which are generated from repeated use of the IM. The BER performance of the proposed IM based I-Q DS/SS system is evaluated in multi-user environment under Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) and Rayleigh flat fading channel conditions. Simulation studies revealed that the proposed scheme works quite similar to the conventional Gold code DS/SS system for the same sequence lengths. The superiority of the proposed scheme is in terms of its security, availability of unlimited number of spreading sequences with larger spreading gain, and ease in sequence generation.
