The dynamic properties and behavior of compacted soil materials used in earthfill dams are evaluated by resonant column and cyclic triaxial tests. For an unsaturated clayey soil, used in the impervious core of earthfill dams, it was found that for low-amplitude vibrations, the shear modulus, G_o, increases with confining pressures, σ_o, in proportion to (σ_o)~(0.43), whereas the damping ratio, D_o, (ranging from 6% to 8.5%) remains practically unchanged. For high-amplitude vibrations, normalized values of shear modulus, G/G_o, and damping ratio, D, were established as a function of cyclic shear strain, γ_c, which were found to be independent of confining pressure and small deviations (+-2%) of compaction water content from the optimum value. The liquefaction resistance of a saturated sand-gravel used in the shells of earthfill dams, was found to be strongly affected by the relative density, D_r, of the granular material, especially for high values of cyclic stress ratio.
