Study on Impact of Dismantled or Retired Dam on Ecological Environment

Although the reservoir projects at home and abroad have played a tremendous role in flood control, irrigation, power generation, water supply, shipping and aquaculture, but in view of dam's service life, functional degradation, and high maintenance cost for rein-forcement, some reservoir dams will be removed or retired. A way of understanding potential impacts induced by the removal of dams is to recall the results caused by dam that was built in this river system. In this paper, it firstly describes construction of dam and its environ-mental impact in view of impact of reservoir dam on climate, water quality, biology and res-ervoir sedimentation, and then describes the status of dam removal in China and the United States, analyzes the reasons to dismantle dam and space-time impact caused by removal of dam on ecological environment, and describes the method to evaluate impact after dam is dis-mantled on ecological environment. Additionally, it firstly makes an evaluation investigation on ecological environment of river on a reservoir at home. The result shows that construc-tion, removal and retirement of dams are all complicated systematic projects, retirement and removal of dam as well as study on ecological environment is of great significance. It is just a beginning in china.
