This study examines the fatigue resistance of orthopedic grade ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) at varying crosslink densities. Two fatigue evaluation methods were used, a defect tolerant and a stress-life approach. The defect tolerant approach shows that increasing the crosslink densities in the polymer results in a decreased resistance to crack propagation. The stress life analysis results show an increase in cycles to yield for a given stress range as crosslink density increases. Small angle X-ray scattering is used to examine structural changes due to cyclic loading.
