Finite element analysis of compressible solids often uses Ogden's strain energy function. The response of open-cell polyurethane (PU) and closed-cell low density polyethylene (LDPE) foams was measured in compression, tension, simple shear and combinations of these. This paper examines the match between the Ogden function, experimental data, and micromechanics models, based either on regular open-celled structures or gas compression in soft closed-cell foams.
