In this study we have analysed the role played by nonlinear shear stress-strain relations F∝|v|~m in the fragmentation of disordered coatings under uniaxial tension. In a one-dimensional spring-network model, the mean fragment length < L > scales at longer times with the applied strain ε, so that < L > ∝ ε~(-κ) holds. The power law exponent κ ranges between m/(m+2) and m/(m+1), which are the limits for strongly and weakly disordered coatings, respectively. These scaling laws are well obeyed by SiO_x coatings on poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) films and by paint coatings on rubber membranes.
