The focus of this paper will be on the influence of values held by designers (predominantly in relation to recycled materials) on the outcomes of sustainable design. It will commence by introducing plastics recycling, as this is the area of interest. It then introduces the design decision-making process through the works of key authors, paying particular attention to values. It will then discuss the influence of values on design decision making through a retrospective analysis case study of work done by undergraduates at Loughborough University. The outcome will be a greater understanding of the influence of designer's values that will support the creation of tools to aid sustainable development.
