Worldwide air quality standards for particulate matter (PM) have recently come under siege as health statistical data suggest links between ambient PM mass-based data and human morbidity and mortality> In response to a court order, the USEPA recently reviewed the PM standard and concludedthat a fine particulate standard (PM_(2.5)) should be added to the PM_(10) standard in order to more adequately protect public health. Globally, other reviews of national PM standards have been initiated.
