The paper presents a "Subdivision Projection Method" for detecting the gouging interference in 3-axis NC machining. Firstly, the machining surface and the partial cutter under the cylinder are triangularly subdivided, respectively obtaining two sets of triangular plane pieces. Secondly, it is assumed that the cutter is located at an interference-free initial position above the machining surface, imaged that the cutter moves along the axis vector towards the part surface, and "halts" at the first contact point between the cutter and the part surface. Moreover, the solution of this first contact point can be simplified as the seeking of an intersection point between two sets of triangular pieces. In order to greatly decrease the interference-measuring time, the concept of "Interference Characteristic Point" is introduced, and the method of primary-detection and detailed-detection together with the "containing boxes" technology are adopted. The aim of "Subdivision Projection Method" is to provide a general algorithm for inference avoidance in 3-axis NC machining.
