Robustness and reliability of manufacturing a pulley in a virtual environment

Manufacturing like metal work, will have changed significantly in the next five years. Except for Research and Development, more and more companies are transferring their manufacturing operations to low labour cost countries. Virtual engineering plays a vital role in this process. However, virtual engineering technology has to be robust and reliable. This paper describes the reliability of manufacturing in a virtual environment by comparing the results from simulation and experiment of a pulley forming process. Manufacturers are concerned with the process efficiency, localized buckling and spring back. These characteristics are observed in the simulation process and methods to minimize their effect are investigated. For understanding this operation and verifying the numerical models, experiments which were designed to show the development of the deformation in workpiece have been conducted. The numerical models were built to represent the same conditions as the tests, and the results have shown good correlation between them. The results obtained have shown that designers who can be in different locations can see the manufacturing process in a digital fashion.
